The DV888 by YoYoFactory was released in 2009. It is based on the DV8 yo-yo by Buzz-On that, due to patent issues with YoYoJam, was never officially released and only 100 pre-production units were made. The DV8 was quite popular, however, that YoYoFactory teamed up with Buzz-On to breathe life back into this desired flat-rimmed design, in the form of this full-metal yo-yo, which was developed as a more affordable version of the 888 series.

On April 1st, 2013, a signature series edition of the DV888 for Daniel "Zammy" Ickler, was released on YoYoExpert, known as the Soul Doubt. The proceeds from each yo-yo purchased were personally donated by Ickler himself to the Children's Miracle Network charitable organization. Only ten of these yo-yos were produced, selling for $50 USD each.

In 2014, YoYoFactory released an improved responsive version of the DV888 more focused on beginning players, along with an upgrade kit (sold separately) that can be used to make it into a bind-response yo-yo.
